MEDITATION: A KEY FOR GOOD HEALTH AND WELLNESS

 Meditation is an ancient tradition, but still practice in cultures all over the world to create a sense of calm and inner harmony.

      Meditation can be defined as a set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention. Meditation is also a consciousness-changing technique that has been shown to have a wide number of benefits on psychological well-being.

       These days, with greater need to reduce stress in the midst of our busy schedule and demanding lives, meditation is increasing in popularity.

EARLY HISTORY OF MEDITATION:

A Japanese monk, Dosho, discovered Zen on a visit to China in 653 and introduced the practice of meditation to Japan upon his return to the country, opening the first hall for meditation. The practice grew significantly in Japan from the 8th country AD onward, bringing the practice of meditation with it.

           The term "mediate" originates from the Latin word meditation which means, " to ponder". Monk Guigo II introduced the terminology for the first time in the 12th century AD.

      

 

SOME KEY THINGS ABOUT MEDITATION:

. Meditation has been practiced in cultures all over the world for thousand of years.

. While meditation is often used for religious purposes, many people practice it independently of any religious or spiritual beliefs or practices.

. Meditation can also be used on a psychotherapeutic technique.

. Nearly every religion, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Jadoism and Islam has a tradition of using mediatative practice.

TYPES OF MEDITATION:

There are many types of meditation. These are:

i. MINDFULNESS MEDITATION: Mindfulness meditation originates from Buddhist teachings and is the most popular meditation technique in the west.

        This practice combines concentration with awareness. You may find it helpful to focus on an object to your breath while you observe and bodily sensation, thoughts, or feelings.

ii. SPIRITUAL MEDITATION: Spiritual meditation is used in Eastern religious, such as Hinduism and Daoism, and in Christian Faith.

           Spiritual meditation makes you realize the the eternal truth and let go of all that had happened and will happen. The present is where you want to be and find solace in. The need to practice spiritual meditation comes from an innate longing to see and think beyond the chaotic world surrounding you.

iii. FOCUSED MEDITATION: Focused meditation involves concentration using any of the five senses.

For example, you can focus on something internal, like your breath, or you can bring in internal influence to help focus your attention.

iv. MOVEMENT MEDITATIONS: Moving meditation is a meditative state, a shift of consciousness while doing simple movements. It involves moving slowly, firmly, and rhythmically, with correct posture and with deep continuous breath.

           Although most people think of yoga when they hear movement meditation, this practice may include walking through the woods, gardening, qigong, and other gentle of motion.

              MOVEMENT MEDITATION

v. MANTRA MEDIATION: Mantra meditation is prominent in many teachings. This type of meditation uses a repetitive sound to clear the mind. It can be a word , phrase, or sound such as popular "Om" .

vi. TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION: Transcendental meditation is a popular type of meditation. This practice has been the subject of numerous studies in the scientific community.

vii. PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION: Also known as body scan meditation, progressive relaxation is a practice aimed reducing tension in the body and promoting relaxation.

            This form of meditation is often used to relieve stress and unwind before bedtime.

viii. LOVING-KINDNESS MEDITATION: Loving-kindness meditation is also known as " Metta-Meditation which means benevolence, loving-kindness, friendliness, amity, good will and active interest in others.

           Loving-kindness meditation is used to strengthen feelings of compassion, kindness and acceptance toward oneself and others.

ix. VISUALIZATION MEDITATION: Visualization meditation is a technique focused on enhancing feelings of relaxation, peace and calmness by visualizing positive sense or images.

HOW TO PRACTICE:

. Choose a quiet spot that is free of distractions.

. Set a time limit.

. Pay attention to your body and get       comfortable.

. Focus on your breathing.

. Notice your thoughts.
